My Five Gym Dos and Don’ts!

DON’T: Touch your face at the gym! It is a big no no even when you have sweat dripping down your face and salt in your eyes! Your hands are full of bacteria, no matter how clean you think you are, and the oils are not good for your face either. This bacteria and oil can cause breakouts and enlarged pores. It is important to keep equipment clean and to wipe down machines after each circuit. Not to mention you are not only wiping your own  bacteria on your face and mouth but also from every other person at the gym as well.

DO: Wash your hands before and after the gym, you don’t realize what all you’ve touched and this just keeps the gym environment cleaner for everyone! You don’t want to walk away with a staph infection, especially on your facial area. Remember to wipe off the machines BEFORE and AFTER you use them!!!!

DON’T: For the ladies and the gentlemen rocking the “man bun”, pony tail holders are a  terrible source of bacteria for your hair especially when you are sweating. I have personal experience from crying at the hairdresser when I was threatened with a pixie cut because of how much damage I had caused to my hair underneath. There is nothing wrong with a pixie cut, but I’ve been growing my hair out all my life and I wasn’t ready to cut it short at the age of 16. I used to play golf for hours on end during the summer months. I would then go to the gym after my time at the golf course. I was destroying the bottom layer of my hair underneath from using elastic bands in the same place and sweating day after day. Therefore……

DO: Wear your hair in a french braid or wear a hat and french braid it down the back of the hat with the pony tail holder at the bottom of your braid since that part normally gets cut when you get a trim. I promise this will help to maintain healthy and more manageable hair. I realize you may forget a hat or not know how to braid, but using an elastic band in the same place repeatedly or throwing your hair in a messy bun (especially if it is wet), can cause more damage than you think. Since I learned what consequences can occur, I have since changed my habits and I have had nothing but good reports. My hair is the longest it has ever been in my life. I also recommend some type of hair oil to help mend your hair problems. There are many on the market, but only put it on as recommended.

DON’T: Wear makeup to the gym! This is a big NO NO! I am very guilty of this myself and have a bad habit of working out after work with make-up on left over from the day. Just STOP IT! It  will clog your pores and cause breakouts… Who wants that?

DO: Buy some makeup remover wipes and/or cleanser and keep them in your purse or gym bag. Therefore, you have no excuse to not take your makeup off once you have arrived at the gym.

DON’t: Repeat the same workout routine. Let’s be honest, it just gets boring and your body will get used to the same muscle movements that will eventually not be as effective in meeting your wellness goals.

DO: Switch up your workouts!!! Otherwise your muscles just adapt to the same routine!! Work some new muscle groups and start seeing results!! Try a new app, a new machine, or a new cardio workout. I promise you will leave the gym happier and a little stiffer but with better results! Just remember all good things take time and your abs are made in the kitchen not in the gym!! Its 20% gym, 80% kitchen!

DON’T: Whatever device you use (if any) to listen to music while working out, don’t let it touch your face while at the gym or after if you haven’t cleaned it. You are just asking for trouble with the spread of bacteria……..

DO: Buy some disinfecting wipes (or something of the sort) and wipe off your device after you workout…… think about all of the places you put your phone. Do you want nasty bacteria from the gym sitting on your bed or on your kitchen counter? I don’t think so….. 🙂

P.S. “The only bad workout is the one that didn’t happen”

See you at the gym! 😉
